I have had the best couple of weeks back in the studio! Super grateful to have @roseprincedesigns and @honeybollinitextiles back - both studying weave at Uni but taking a year to learn more about the industry and discover new invaluable skills. We have also had lots of new students through the door for our Frame Loom, Table Loom and Floor Loom workshops! We have now had 2 sessions on the Eight Week Floor Loom course where the lovely Melanie has designed and wound warps ready to go on the loom (the wonderful loom 'Sue') We shall be weaving a huge 60cm x 2m blanket/wrap in Melanie's own design...can't wait to see how it weaves up! Our Frame Loom and Table Loom workshops have been taught using totally yummy British Wool - it has been wonderful to share my passion with others and tell them about the industry. ✨The start of new beginnings for 2025! ✨ And here we are, back in the studio, excited about new things happening ahead! This year sees us going 100% British with the yarns we use for workshops, but also for our fabrics. After many trials, test samples and warps, we have chosen some beautiful woollen yarns which are produced entirely in the UK. From flock to fabric! Our first workshop of the year was our Frame Loom Weaving course using wool from @jarbontextiles @fibreworkshop and @gulletbarton. Some beautiful blends and predominantly undyed, our students learned how to use the yarn to weave various patterns on their loom. The best part about this workshop is that you take the loom away with you at the end of the session to carry on Weaving at home. There is something very special about using fibre which is produced a lot closer to home. I have just sent out my latest newsletter with some exciting news! First up, from 2025, we are going to be using 100% British Wools for all our workshops. Over the last year, I have been speaking with small producers, farmers and suppliers and I have been on quite the journey discovering how under valued British Wool is!! One story really got me...for 22 kilos of fleece, the farmer was given just £2.99!! So, to help and support British as much as I can and shout about how fab it is, I will be sharing my stories and giving examples of how beautiful the yarn can be once woven up during my workshops. Secondly, I am bringing a new course to our line up which is an 8 week course!! And the best bit is you will be using one of our heritage floor looms!! Taught over 4 hours per week, you will design, set up and weave a wrap/shawl/small blanket, learning techniques to give you a high end heirloom piece. I am super proud to introduce my first four Weavers who joined me this week for a Graduate teaching week. Over the last couple of years, I have met so many lovely uni students who have joined me to see how a Weaving Studio operates. I always love sharing my own experiences and journey since uni and passing on any tips or tricks that may help students with their own weaving projects. However earlier in the year, I decided to offer four graduates the chance to spend the week with me - giving them the chance to see a project through from beginning to end and to build up their confidence for working independently. Wow wow and wow! - I love it when you go along to a workshop and you not only learn loads but you leave feeling like you have learnt SO much and with an energy to continue the process at home! I spent yesterday at a Natural Dyeing Workshop with the amazing @myrtle_sweet @samanthajones457 I haven't dyed any yarn since my days at @ucatextiles and never using natural dyes. I've always wanted to give it a try and I was not disappointed! I never knew you could create such a range of colours - and gorgeous ones too! I was always a bit of a nerd when it came to dyeing - writing out recipes and notating every detail. So seeing how small changes can change colours quite dramatically was fascinating! The key reason as to why I wanted to go along to the workshop was to understand the process, which helps make more informed decisions about how you can improve your own practice and think more consciously about making. Today I had the pleasure of being invited into a local school to teach 6 and 7 year olds how to weave! I was thrilled to be asked, as I am constantly saying when teaching in my adult workshops, that it is such a shame art and crafts are getting less time in the curriculum. Children are always fun to teach - they ask so many questions (which I love!) and they also just go for it!! As adults, we constantly question ourselves - will this look good, does that colour look right - whereas kids just pick something because they like it! And today was proof as to why arts and crafts are SO important in the education system. Whilst working with a couple of students at a time, the remaining class were doing maths and written work. Some were distracted, getting up from seats, not wanting to work and then as soon as they came and sat with me, they were focused, listening and produced some amazing Weaving!! Even the teacher said that he'd never seen some of his students concentrate for so long. The way we teach in our education system does not work for everyone. We aren't all academic, we aren't all creative but it's finding that balance - I just wish there was the option to have both!! It was the best day yesterday going to @jarbontextiles for their Open Weekend. Honestly, I was in awe of how they create the beautiful yarn that they supply, from fleece to skein! And the best part is, it's mostly done using vintage machinery - which makes the yarn even better! Exciting news!! I have been busy working behind the scenes on the New Frame Loom Weaving Kit which supports British Yarn and Small Producers and Farmers. The Weaving Kit has a 40cm x 30cm Frame Loom, full instruction booklet, British Yarn and other bits you need to create your own woven fabric. The Yarn in this kit is from the fabulous Jenn @fibreworkshop in Norfolk who produces wonderful woolly yarn using fleece from Norfolk Horn sheep. Jenn then naturally dyed the yarn using home grown produce or from the local area. Now this was a fun one to make! The client asked for the design to be based on the classic Paul Smith stripes - we wanted the colours to pop and to give strong bands of colour. A huge 50cm diameter and finished with a copper lining, giving a warm, atmospheric glow when lit up. It's final hanging place will be above a beautiful dining table in a Victorian home. Fun fact! Another wonderful two days teaching the 'Whole Loom Set Up' workshop. It's always such a lovely one - you learn how to design your own project, wind a warp and how to dress the loom. (I always love that term - like you're finding it a new outfit to wear!) Everyone who attends the session thinks that it's going to be completely overwhelming and so much to learn. They are right about the last bit but what they discover is by breaking down each stage into manageable chunks, you can achieve the whole process and it is a lot easier than they thought! It's all about accepting it's all part of Weaving - it's part of the process. I say it's like decorating - get the prep work right and then the end results will be great! This has to be one of the biggest lampshades I've made to date! And it was such a joy to make! The client had a vision the first time I met her at an event - she knew exactly what pattern, colours and lining she wanted! And it has come together beautifully. The double tier is a fab design that makes a ceiling shade stand out and become a feature in your home. We have also created a smaller lampshade to complement this one in the downstairs hallway. I had to add a pic of me next to the lampshade, just to show you how big it is!! This is one of my favourite patterns that we used in the studio recently. Taken from the amazing 'A Weavers Book of 8 shaft patterns', we used Supersoft wool from @knollyarns and absolutely loved the result! The fabric was woven by James, who came to the workshop to weave for the first time, and made enough fabric for me to then make up a lampshade for him. It's been a busy couple of days in the studio!! 4 weavers stepped through the door to learn how to set up a loom and another weaver came to weave his very own silk scarf on one of the floor looms! So it's been a hive of activity - planning warps, warp winding, winding on, threading, putting threads through the reed, tying on and after all that, eventually weaving on the beautiful Louet Jane looms @louet_worldwide And John merrily weaved away on the floor loom, weaving a warp that I'd set up ready for him. I haven't set up silk on the loom since my uni days so it was a joy to work with it again! It was a joy to create these lampshades for a client - two for pendants in the lounge, one for a table lamp and one for a bedroom! We looked at samples, matched yarns and decided on patterns, all to compliment what they had in each room. I always love visiting Unravel @unravelfestival - not only is it a treasure trove of goodies but I get so inspired chatting to the makers and suppliers of the fabulous yarns. All small businesses, all wanting to create more ethical and more sustainable products. The passion that goes into these products is what you are supporting with every purchase made. I heard about the sheep, how the fleece travels to a mill sometimes only miles away and then wound on to cones or skeins for the end user. So no planes or thousands of miles involved - all produced here in the UK. It makes me wonder, how many people know these suppliers are out there? The difference in spending a few more pounds makes such a huge difference to our world. And we are back! Hello 2024! I always think at the end of the year after a crazy busy festive season, January will be quiet and I can start the year calmly...I am always wrong!! We are two weeks in and lampshades are being woven and already we have had two fab workshops in the studio. Today's workshop was a fab one - four different projects which had all been chosen by the students. They sent me their designs, I set the looms up ready for a day of Weaving and they have produced some marvellous fabric! They will then be sewn up and made into cushions, a table runner, a lampshade and purses. And for the first time, we had Zoe weaving on one of the floor looms! Rehomed last year from @ucatextiles, I have woven on it several times but Zoe was up for the challenge to weave a wider piece of fabric for a larger cushion. I put together our loom kits about 4 years ago, to allow people to give Weaving a go, without investing a fortune! I had a lovely couple of days this week teaching the Whole Loom Set Up workshop. Both Ginny and Annette had been to the studio for a beginner's Table Loom workshop and had enjoyed it so much, they came back to learn the whole set up process of preparing a loom ready for Weaving. This has been a very special project and one which has been a long time in the making!!! My wonderful dear and supportive friend Wendy, was given a gift to have a scarf designed and handwoven for her. I normally chat this through with the client, but this time I decided to take the risk and design something for her! The colours were inspired by Wendy's home and personality and I wanted to weave a design which was something completely different to my previous designs. The double cloth is a pattern I haven't revisited since my Uni days and I quickly remembered why I love it so much! I am so happy with the result and after delivering the finished article earlier today, it was made even more special to see Wendy's reaction. After many hours of blood, sweat and tears (literally!) the studio has had a major rejig to fit in ANOTHER floor loom! When I had an email to say more floor looms were being sold, this one felt very close to my heart. When I was at Uni, I visited Joan - a lovely lady who lives close to me, who had been Weaving for over 50 years. In her huge barn, she had 10 floor looms which were used regularly by a group of Weavers, the eldest being in their 90s! COVID hit which meant the group stopped meeting and sadly old age has now prevented them getting back together, which meant the time had come for the looms to go. So with all this history, I could not let the opportunity pass to have another loom so it was coming home to the barn! This meant a big change round of the studio and this is the result... Life is busy!! Every Summer I slow down to enjoy time with my little'ens and that has meant some time out from my phone and socials...and it felt SO good. During a trip to the Isle of Wight, I managed to teach my daughter how to knit (the basics as I only know that!), I did a puzzle and actually read a whole book!!! And it reminded me how important it is to step away from the chaos life brings and enjoy the simple things. However, now we are back, me and my studio have spent some quality time together and Wow! There have been some big changes!! Once it's a little more organised, I will show you the results but let's just say, Roger (my floor loom) may have some friends 🥰 I always have a break from teaching in August to rejig, revamp and start planning for Autumn/Winter! This lovely cushion and lampshade combo is a commission I completed a couple of weeks ago for a fab couple who brought over their lamp base and we designed something to fit. The cushion was gifted to them by a friend as an extra surprise! I'm working hard on some other orders and playing with some new patterns/designs. When I heard that @ucatextiles was closing their Weave department, I was gutted to think that all of the looms would be going. There was so much history in that department and the looms all had their own personalities!! So I thought I have to rescue some!! And a few weeks later, two countermarch floor looms are now up and running in the studio!! And it makes me VERY happy! To think that I may have woven on one of these during my degree is quite something! The fab @annabelsweetbrier has been doing some Work Experience with me and I taught her the trials and tribulations of setting up a Countermarch loom...we had some challenges but by the end of the length, they became friends!! A client asked if I could make a lampshade for her, which would be plain in colour but with a textured pattern. First time for me as normally I add in a lot of colour combos! But, I must say, I was thrilled with the simplicity of the lampshade, really focusing your eye on the beauty of the yarns and subtle texture. These were a joy to make!! I have been super busy with commissions recently that I have forgotten to share them with you! So here is the most recent one! This has to be one of my favourite parts of my job...a client coming to me with images of a base or space where they want their new lampshade to go. We then work together, picking out the details and then I can create something unique to fit into their interior. It means I'm not just churning out the same designs and it brings so much joy when the client walks in and sees for the first time what we've created. You can never beat that feeling!! And I'm going to give you an honest truth, I charge no extra for a commissioned piece. People are often put off thinking it's going to put £££'s onto their order, but if I have the yarns, it will be costed on the same basis as my other work. I am back!!!! Wowsers!!! What a crazy end to 2022 and 2023 has started off with a bang too! Firstly, I want to thank everyone who came to see me, bought from me, chatted with me and supported me at the events last year. It was one of my busiest and most successful Christmas period since 2019 and it felt so good as a small business to feel the love and support! Not sure about anyone else but I felt there was a shift in people's buying habits...I think we are getting bored of mass produced rubbish and choosing to buy less but spend more on unique crafted pieces created by craftsmen, artists and makers. And it felt bloomin marvelous to think how many loom kits were being opened on Christmas Day!!! So 2023 is starting off with a queue of lampshades orders! And super exciting as many have been designed to fit within the clients interior colour scheme. Well it's the 1st November and it's now ok to talk about Christmas!! Anyone out there with an 8 shaft Loom...listen up! I have spent the last few months putting together a kit so you can weave your own Christmas Runner for the Festive season! Inspired by the Fairisle knitted jumpers, I thought it would be lovely to have a woven version! There are 7 cones of beautiful Shetland Yarn included in the kit and instructions which have been written in a way, that beginner weavers can understand the drafts easily and feel confident weaving their own project. I received the loveliest email from a student today who attended one of the Beginners Table Loom Weaving workshops this week. It ended, 'thank you for such an informative, inspiring and relaxing workshop.' This is the reason why I teach. After a few days away in the Cotswolds, I am back in the studio! When I was at the @surreyhillsenterprises event @denbies_wine_estate last weekend, I received SO many lovely comments about this new design, Loxwood. I came up with the design for a client, who wanted the lampshade to co-ordinate with her Turkish rug and after sharing it with you guys, I realised that it was a popular one so had to weave up some more! The beauty of this design is that no two lampshades are ever going to be the same. I change the colours and design as I'm weaving, so it just depends what colour mood I'm in!! This one is a 25cm drum which is 18cm high with a gorgeous gold lining, which gives a lovely glow when lit. Today has been a making day in the studio! The studio has been having a move around in preparation for @surreyartistopenstudios which starts in June! I have been wanting to move my floor loom for some time, however, it has to go through a doorway which means dismantling it to get it through 😬 The hubby is being roped in (again!) and we are hoping to do this asap! This was just the best lampshade to make for a client! The client asked if I could make a lampshade to compliment her rug (scroll to the last pic). I came up with a few designs but kept going back to the drawing board, when one day, this design popped in to my head! I wanted several designs to come together, like in the rug, with lots of colour which meant I would design the fabric as I was weaving... A risk as you don't know exactly what the end result would be until it was off the loom! But, the risk paid off! I was so thrilled with it, but most importantly, so was my client!! This week was an Intermediate workshop week! For two days, I had the pleasure teaching Mary, Helen and Jamie, how to design a warp and set up a loom from scratch! I have been super productive on the loom recently which has been SO nice, as over the Christmas period, events take over and never leaves time to Weave! And it was such a lovely group to teach this morning - lots of questions, lots of laughs and one who is super keen to get her own loom and continue weaving! 2021 has bought many more students through the studio door and it's also been a busy year watching our family grow! Felix has been a dream and I'm super lucky to be able to fit my 'work' (I don't think I can call it that as I love it so much!) around my little people! So thank you! I can't tell you how many Baubles I make each year and it is never enough!! As fabric takes SO long to handweave, I save every little scrap! I had to share this as I am SO happy with how this lampshade has turned out!! This is my first tiered lampshade. I have been wanting to do it for ages, but I kept changing my mind on designs and colours. But I finally decided on this combo last week and I think I've pulled it off! Mainly because you are surrounded by super mega talented people, but also I love the customers who come to visit! And it's even better when some of these visitors are past students! This week I shall be showing you some items which I shall be bringing with me to the Festival. First up are Cushions! All of the fabric is woven here in the studio and then it's travels down to my wonderful Cushion Maker in Dorset. (Lovely Sal also used to be a Weaver so she gets it!) I use some lovely @linwood_fabric wool for the backing and add in a feather pad. You also have a hidden zip so you can remove the pad if the cushion needed a bit of cleaning. WOAH! This week has been a busy one! So far I've been making Christmas stock (you've probably seen my stories) which has included, Baubles, Santa Frame Loom Kits, Christmas Fabric for stockings and a new range of purses and pouches! On top of that, I've put a new design on the loom, made a lampshade and had a good tidy of the studio!! I feel cleansed and way more productive in a tidy and organised space! Not only does it declutter my working space but my head too!!! Its also been the first full week of school for the middle kiddo, so proud Mumma over here! I love this corner of the studio... What a lovely few days I've had! On Saturday I had a group of 4 lovely ladies in the studio, who had come for a Frame Loom Workshop and it was so fun! They have been friends for a long time and there was a lot of chatting, cake eating and laughing going on!! One of the group was Judith, who has been coming to the barn for the last three years!!! We've become more like friends over that time! Judith is now the proud owner of several looms... I've definitely passed on my addiction!! ***Weaving Workshops*** September brings the return of all of our Weaving Workshops! I am now back in the studio after my Maternity Leave - the littlest kiddo is now with Grandma two days a week and two happy children starting new schools! 👏 It's been a lovely few months taking life at a much slower pace, but now I am ready to go with my favourite, craziest season of the year! 🎄 We have three workshops running with dates available from now until Christmas. Frame Loom Weaving Workshop - A great way for introducing you to the world of weaving using a small Frame Loom. Ideal if you are looking to make wall hangings and small woven projects. And you get to take your loom home at the end of the session so you can create over and over again 😊 Table Loom Workshop - I describe this one as a way to learn how 'proper' fabric is made. Using a Table Loom, you will discover how it all works, try out several designs and then design and weave your own piece of fabric. You can then take it home and make it into something beautiful! Intermediate Workshop - A two day workshop which covers everything you need to know about setting up a loom. Again, using one of our Table Looms, you will design, set up and weave your fabric to take home. All the dates are online but if you can't see one that suits, do let me know as I can often squeeze extra sessions in!
